Essan Dōshū

Essan Dōshū (1629-1709), a Japanese Buddhist monk of the Őbaku school of Zen Buddhism, came to Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868). Born in Fujian Province.
He came to Japan in 1657 at the invitation of Unken Kaikan of Fuzai-ji Temple in Nagasaki. He was later taught by Mokuan Seonan and Oyin Ryuichi, and succeeded to the Dharma from Mokuan.
After founding Jifukuin, a pagoda of Manpukuji Temple, and founding Nandakezan Shari Sonjoji Temple in Osaka, he served as the seventh abbot of Manpukuji Temple.
