Maruyama Okyo, active in Kyoto during the mid-to-late Edo period (1603-1868), was a painter who dominated the art world with a style based on “sketching” that depicted the beauty of nature and objects as they really are, while incorporating techniques from Chinese and Western painting.
His delicate and friendly painting style revolutionized the view of Japanese painting, which until then had been dominated by the Kano school, and established the Maruyama school, which became the starting point of the modern Kyoto art world.
