artdescription
Hanabusa Icchō (1652-1724) was a painter of the mid-Edo period. Born in Kyoto.
He studied under Kano Yasunobu, but later left the school and developed his own style of painting. He was especially good at genre paintings, and his style reflects the liveliness and wit of the town people's culture of the time.Around the Genroku period (1688-1704), he was ordered by the shogunate to be exiled and sent to Miyakejima Island in Izu. The works he painted during his exile are known as “Shima Icchō,” and are especially highly regarded.Ichicho was also well versed in literature and poetry, and he had many exchanges with Matsuo Basho and others.
