Torei Enji (1721/Kyoho 6-1792/Kansei 4) Born in Obata Village, Kanzaki-gun, Omi Province (now Gokasho Obata-cho, Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture). His father was Nakamura Zenzaemon, who ran an apothecary. After meeting Zenzai Kogetsu, he decided to become an ordained priest. Later, he trained under Hakuin Keizuru (1686-1769), and at the age of 29, he received a seal of approval from Hakuin. In 1760, he founded Ryusawa-ji Temple in Suruga. Together with Suiō Genro, he is famous as a disciple of Hakuin.
