Shima Kinryo (1782-1862) was a painter of the Nagasaki School active in the late Edo period in Japan. His first name was Peng. The first half of his life is not well known and details are unknown. However, it is believed that he was formerly a samurai of the Nanbu domain who gave up being a man and fled to Nagasaki, where he learned the sketchy flower-and-bird paintings of the Nagasaki School through his friendship with foreign seijin and others. It is said that he came to Himeji at the invitation of Hayato Takasu, the chief retainer of the Himeji domain and a lover of literature and elegance, in the early years of the Tempo Era, but the details are unknown. Many of his works remain in Himeji and the surrounding area, and he is affectionately known as “Kotoryo-san.
