Watanabe Gentai (1749-1822) was a painter of the mid-Edo period. His name was Ei, and his characters were Tinghui, commonly known as Matazo. In addition to Gentai, he also went by other names such as Shodo and Rinrukusodo. He modified his name in the Chinese style and called himself Hen-ei. Born in Edo. Studied painting under Watanabe Minatosui and later became his adopted son. He learned nanga techniques from Nakayama Koyo, and when Minatosui died, he became the teacher of Suzuki Fuyo, who was four years younger than him. He is also known as Tani Buncho’s teacher, but later counted as Buncho’s disciple, and it is assumed that they mutually influenced each other.
