artdescription
Kaigan Jōkō (1722-1786), also known as Kakutei, was born in Nagasaki.
When he was 25 years old, he started to study under Kumashiro Yūhi, who was a painter of Nanpin group, and then he established his own art style.
After that, he became a monk again and went to Edo through Ōsaka.
He is the one who made the Nanpin art style famous around Kyōto and triggered realism in the late-Edo period.
