Mount Higane, near Hakone, has been known as a sacred place.
This mountain was famous in the late-Edo period for from which a lot of landscapes could be seen.
Some views from this mountain were drawn by Katsushika Hokusai. Like this work, paintings drawn by Sō Shiseki are stored in the Tokyo National Museum.
Sō Shiseki (1715-1786) ,born in Edo, was a painter in the mid-Edo period.
It is not known about his youth.
He visited Nagasaki in his mid-40s, there he met Sō Shigan and studied under him. His name Sō Shiseki was named after him.
He was good at drawing realistic flowers and birds. He is sorted as one of painters of the Nanpin group.
