Description: Hakuin Ekaku (1685-1768) was born in Shizuoka.

He was a monk of the Rinzai school in the mid-Edo period.
After becoming a monk when he was 15 years old, he traveled around, and then came back to Shizuoka in his 30s. He became enlightened when he was 42 years old.
Some monks, like Tōrei Enji, studied under him.
