Inoue Yūichi
Yuichi Inoue (1916–1985)
Yuichi Inoue was born in 1916 and passed away in 1985.
In 1957, he exhibited Gutetsu (“Foolish Persistence”) at the São Paulo Biennial, where the art critic Herbert Read praised his work alongside artists such as Jackson Pollock and Pierre Soulages. This recognition brought him international acclaim.
Subsequently, he joined the Bokujinkai (Ink Men Society), led by Morita Shiryū, where he helped pioneer a new world of calligraphic expression and firmly established his reputation abroad.
“It is precisely because I believe that calligraphy alone is the supreme formative art capable of creating the next world
that I devote myself to this path.”
—from Yuichi Inoue, “Calligraphy Is the Supreme Formative Art”
