Maruyama Ōkyo

Maruyama Okyo, who was active in Kyoto from his mid- to late-career, made a name for himself with a style based on "sketching," depicting the natural beauty of nature and objects as they are, while incorporating techniques from Chinese and Western painting. His delicate and approachable style revolutionized the view of Japanese painting, which had previously been dominated by the Kano school, and established the Maruyama school, which became the origin of the modern Kyoto art world.
