Description
Hanabusa Itchō (1652–1724) was a painter of the mid-Edo period, originally from Kyoto. He first studied under Kanō Yasunobu of the Kanō school, but later left the atelier and developed an independent style of his own. He became particularly renowned for genre paintings, in which the vitality and wit of contemporary townspeople culture are vividly reflected.

During the Genroku era, Itchō was sentenced to exile by the shogunate and was sent to Miyake Island in Izu. Works produced during this period of banishment are known as “Shima Itchō” (Island Itchō) and are especially highly regarded.

Itchō was also well versed in literature and poetry, and he maintained close associations with figures such as Matsuo Bashō.
