“Fisherman and woodcutter”

Dōmoto Inshō (1891-1975) was a Japanese painter from Kyoto. His real name was Sanosuke Domoto. After graduating from the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts in 1910, he worked as a pattern painter for Nishijin textiles before entering the Kyoto Municipal College of Painting (now Kyoto City University of Arts) in 1918 with the intention of becoming a Japanese-style painter. In 1919, “Fukakusa,” his first work to be exhibited at the Teiten (Imperial Exhibition), was selected for the Honorable Mention Award, and “Choumarizu” won the Special Mention Award at the 3rd Teiten (Imperial Exhibition). As a professor at a painting school and the head of a private school, he trained many young artists and became a member of the Imperial Household Art Gallery in 1944. After the war, he expanded his activities to the world of abstract expression and barrier painting, and was active internationally, exhibiting many works at international exhibitions.
